Kairouan & El Jem: Two UNESCO Wonders
Islam's fourth-holiest city and Africa's greatest Roman arena, in one unforgettable day.
Head inland to Kairouan, founded in 670 CE and the first great Arab-Muslim city in North Africa. Stand in the vast arcaded courtyard of the Great Mosque of Uqba — the architectural blueprint for every mosque of the Maghreb — then see the 9th-century Aghlabid basins and the dazzling tilework of the Zaouia of Sidi Sahbi. After a traditional lunch, drive south to El Jem, where the largest Roman amphitheatre in Africa rises straight out of the olive plains. Walk its arena floor and the underground galleries that once held gladiators and beasts. Private, air-conditioned, and hotel-to-hotel.

Good to know
Is this a lot of time in the car?
It's a long day — El Jem is well south of the coast, so expect roughly 4–5 hours of total driving. The vehicle is private and air-conditioned, and it's the classic way to see both monuments in one trip.
Can I go inside the Great Mosque?
You can enter the vast courtyard and admire the prayer hall from the doorway (the hall itself is reserved for worshippers). Modest dress is required — shoulders and knees covered; wraps are usually available at the entrance.
Is lunch really included?
Yes — a traditional sit-down Tunisian lunch is included. Drinks are extra, and you can upgrade the menu as an option.
